Formerly a teacher, I am a positive reinforcement dog trainer in the Southwest area of Las Vegas.  A couple of years ago I was given an adorable Chihuahua who quickly exhibited signs of fear.  Frustrated with my lack of skills and knowledge, I knew I needed help.  I became inspired by the philosophy and training techniques of Victoria Stilwell and decided to turn a troubled situation into a positive one.  Combining my passion for dogs and helping others learn and improve, I  have acquired my certification as a dog trainer from Animal Behavior College.

My invovlement with helping dogs in the Las Vegas valley is constantly growing through a variety of volunteer opportunities. At the NSPCA, I worked to train a variety of adoptable dogs with basic obedience skills, while focusing on building up the confidence of several fearful ones. My goal was to help these shelter dogs feel less stress while improving their patience and relationship skills, enabling them to become more adoptable. Lately I have transferred these efforts to the dogs fostered through the Las Vegas Valley Humane Society.  As one of their volunteer trainers, I work with their foster-humans to help assess and prepare the adoptable dogs for their forever home.   Tales to Tails is another program to which I enjoyed volunteering my time.  A branch of the Heaven Can Wait Animal Society, this program uses certified therapy dogs to encourage children with learning disabilities to improve their reading skills. In a controlled and organized setting, the dogs create a calm environment, giving young students confidence and motivation to read and grow.  I also believe that understanding canine body language is essential to preventing dog bites and the overpopulation of local dog shelters; thus I have teamed up with the Angels for Animals program of Heaven Can Wait to educate local elementary children about Dog Bite Prevention.  When we humans can recognize canine stress signals we can better prevent tragic situations.

Through my experiences and studies I have come to learn that many dogs develop fearful tendencies due to genetics, traumatic incidents, or limited socialization.  This fear can turn into aggression if not resolved.  As a certified dog trainer, I intend to help dog owners learn the language of their dog in order to prevent problems and develop a better relationship with their four-legged companions.  Using positive reinforcement techniques along with this understanding of canine body language, Mutts with Moxie will focus on alleviating a dog's fear-based reactions before aggression sets in.  Through Mutts with Moxie, I hope to give peace to many frustrated and fearful dogs who have been given up or misunderstood by improving communication and building confidence one paw at a time.
